WHO ARE WE?

MISSION

Ometepe Bilingual School is a project of Hacienda Merida.  At Ometepe Bilingual School we believe that education is of utmost importance for a more prosperous and brighter future. Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders and our goal is to provide them with the education and language skills needed to expand their future opportunities.  At our school, bilingual education is provided by pairing Spanish-language instruction by local teachers with English-language instruction using the skills of international volunteers. We believe a foundation for long-term, sustainable eco-tourism development on Ometepe and in Nicaragua can be created by educating and empowering the local population.

HISTORY

Ometepe Bilingual School began as English classes for adults at the dining area of the Hacienda the summer of 2007 but today the bilingual school has founded an elementary school program and has its own buildings located on the grounds of the hotel. In 2013 we opened our first eco-friendly classroom, built from plastic waste and sustainable earth-bag technology. We also welcomed our first elementary school class and we celebrated the first graduating class in December 2013.Since then, the local teaching staff tripled and we host pre-k through fourth grade classes.

Our first classroom was a result of Hacienda Merida’s plastic reuse program. Since 2008 we have been encouraging the local community to collect plastic bottles and fill them with non-degradable trash such as plastic bags. Hacienda Merida pays $0.50 USD for each filled bottle. We have received more than three tons of these plastic bottles and have used them to build our classroom and other projects, including tables and chairs for our local public school and for Hacienda Merida.

The Ometepe Bilingual School functions similarly to a charter school in the US. OBS follows the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education curriculum and there is no tuition nor registration fees. Class size is limited, but enrollment is open to all parents who are interested and willing to commit to their child’s education, to supporting their child at home, and to keeping their child in the program throughout primary school.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The instant you walk through the doors of this school you become an important role model in these children's lives. Consider the impact you want to have on these children each time you enter their lives. Lead by example – show them how to be, don't tell them how to be. Let them discover their own abilities through their struggle in the learning process. With so many new faces in these children's lives it is important for the volunteers at this school to learn and practice the values of the school while bringing their own unique interests and skill set to the classroom.

OBS is striving to promote healthy habits among all of our students. Please be mindful of this and do not smoke, eat junk food or drink sodas around them. It takes a village to race a child so only eat healthy snacks in front them!
